Athens transit stations undergo major upgrades

The Greek Ministry of Infrastructure and Transport has launched a comprehensive program to upgrade the Athens Suburban Railway and Metro Line 1 (ISAP) stations. The initiative aims to improve the functionality, cleanliness, and accessibility of the network to enhance the daily commuting experience.

Key interventions include renovations, infrastructure maintenance, repairs to flooring and steps, improved lighting, and the replacement of electronic passenger information displays. The project also focuses on accessibility improvements for all Metro stations in Athens and Thessaloniki, as well as 33 railway stations across Greece.

In the Athens Suburban Railway specifically, interventions are planned for more than 20 stations. A tender process is currently underway for the renovation of five specific stations: Ano Liosia, Metamorfosi, Irakleio, Kifisia, and Penteli. These works, which include waterproofing roofs and removing graffiti, are expected to be completed within four months following contract signatures. The program is being implemented through the coordination of Hellenic Railways, Hellenic Railway Properties (formerly GAIAOSE), and STASY, utilizing both national and European resources.
