Athens public transport infrastructure upgrades

Overview

The Greek Ministry of Infrastructure and Transport has initiated a comprehensive program to upgrade the Athens Suburban Railway and Metro Line 1 (ISAP) stations. The project focuses on improving functionality, cleanliness, and accessibility through renovations, infrastructure maintenance, and the replacement of electronic passenger information displays. The initiative also includes accessibility improvements for all Metro stations in Athens and Thessaloniki, as well as 33 railway stations across Greece.

In the Athens Suburban Railway, interventions are planned for more than 20 stations. A tender process is underway for the renovation of five stations—Ano Liosia, Metamorfosi, Irakleio, Kifisia, and Penteli—with works such as waterproofing and graffiti removal expected to be completed within four months of contract signatures. The program is being implemented through the coordination of Hellenic Railways, Hellenic Railway Properties, and STASY, utilizing national and European resources.

Concurrently, maintenance work on Athens Metro Line 3 has necessitated temporary service adjustments. From Sunday, October 25, through Thursday, October 29, five stations—Ethniki Amyna, Cholargos, Nomismatokopeio, Agia Paraskevi, and Chalandri—will close early at 21:40 to facilitate rail replacement on the Katechaki – D. Plakentias section.

During this period, train services will operate in two separate segments: between Dimotiko Theatro – Katechaki and Doukissa Plakentia – Airport. To assist passengers traveling between the disconnected sections, a temporary bus line, X25, will operate between Katechaki and Doukissa Plakentia. Additionally, service to and from the airport will be modified, with trains after 21:40 operating only between Doukissa Plakentia and the airport.
