Greece implements new railway telecontrol and Attica traffic management
Greece is implementing two major infrastructure and safety updates. On the railway, Konstantinos Kyranakis announced that the Athens-Thessaloniki line is now operating with 100% telecontrol and the European Train Control System (ETCS) has been fully installed. This project was completed within the agreed 15-month timeframe.
Simultaneously, the Hellenic Police have launched 'Traffic Commander' and the 'K.O.M.B.O.S.' operational team to combat traffic congestion in the Attica region. Starting September 1, the system utilizes artificial intelligence, 235 traffic cameras, and 10 drones to monitor roads in real time. The strategy involves 138 officers, including specialized motorcycle units, who will respond to incidents like accidents or stalled vehicles to prevent widespread gridlock. The goal is to reduce travel times by up to 30% through a centralized operations center at GADA.
