Greek transportation and traffic management updates

Overview

Greece has initiated several infrastructure and safety upgrades focused on transportation and traffic management. In late August 2026, authorities announced the full installation of the European Train Control System (ETCS) and 100% telecontrol on the Athens-Thessaloniki railway line.

Concurrently, the Hellenic Police launched the ‘Traffic Commander’ and ‘K.O.M.B.O.S.’ operational teams to address congestion in the Attica region. This system utilizes artificial intelligence, 235 cameras, and drones to monitor roads in real time.

Following these developments, the Hellenic Police entered a partnership with the National Technical University of Athens (NTUA) to further enhance the ‘Traffic Commander’ system through the use of digital twins and advanced data analysis. To complement these technological efforts, police have also expanded roadside sobriety checks to include daytime hours to address changing patterns in alcohol consumption.
