Atlanta Falcons face uncertainty in quarterback competition

The Atlanta Falcons are navigating a high-stakes quarterback competition between veteran free agent Tua Tagovailoa and former first-round pick Michael Penix Jr. ahead of the 2026 NFL season.

Following an underwhelming preseason appearance by Tagovailoa, where he struggled in a loss to the Denver Broncos, the team's plans for him as the immediate starter have been called into question. Meanwhile, Penix Jr. is continuing his recovery from a torn ACL suffered last season. While Penix has recently returned to 11-on-11 team drills, head coach Kevin Stefanski announced that Penix will not play in the Falcons' preseason finale against the Miami Dolphins to allow his progression to continue naturally.

Tagovailoa is expected to start in the preseason finale, followed by Cooper Rush and Jack Strand. Offensive coordinator Tommy Rees stated that the coaching staff is maintaining an ‘open dialogue’ regarding the decision, emphasizing that they will evaluate the whole body of work before making a final Week 1 selection.
