Michael Penix Jr. manages ongoing injury concerns
Overview
The Atlanta Falcons' offensive success has been closely tied to rookie quarterback Michael Penix Jr., though his tenure has been marked by significant injury concerns. Following an initial period of high production, Penix underwent rehabilitation for his third ACL injury during training camp, limiting him to individual drills and 7-on-7 action. During this time, Tua Tagovailoa served as the starter. Penix eventually returned to full 11-on-11 team drills after receiving medical clearance for a left knee injury. His return sparked discussions regarding a potential competition for the starting role against Tagovailoa. Ahead of the 2026 NFL season, the competition between veteran free agent Tagovailoa and Penix intensified. Following an underwhelming preseason performance by Tagovailoa against the Denver Broncos, the team's plans for him as the immediate starter were questioned. Meanwhile, Penix continued his recovery from a torn ACL suffered the previous season. Although he returned to 11-on-11 drills, head coach Kevin Stefanski announced Penix would not play in the preseason finale against the Miami Dolphins to allow his progression to continue naturally. Offensive coordinator Tommy Rees noted the staff is maintaining an ‘open dialogue’ regarding the Week 1 starter. More recently, Penix's availability was again in question following a rib injury sustained during the fourth quarter of a 30-23 overtime loss to the Baltimore Ravens. While the injury initially caused him to miss the end of that game, head coach Kevin Stefanski expressed optimism regarding his recovery. Penix was subsequently cleared to play and was removed from the injury report ahead of the Week 6 matchup against the Chicago Bears, where he is expected to lead the offense. However, during the Week 6 game against the Bears, Penix visited the medical tent early in the first quarter.
