Atlantic Cold Blob Signals Weakening of Key Ocean Current

Scientists have identified a persistent cold region in the North Atlantic, often called the “cold blob,” where sea‑surface temperatures are about one degree Celsius below the long‑term average. New research links this anomaly to a slowdown of the Atlantic Meridional Overturning Circulation (AMOC), a major heat‑transport system that moves warm water northward and returns colder water southward. The study combines satellite observations, oceanographic measurements and climate models, and notes that the cooling extends to depth, suggesting altered heat transport rather than surface‑only effects.

The weakening of the AMOC is thought to be driven in part by accelerated melting of Greenland ice, which adds fresh water that hampers the sinking of dense, salty water. Researchers warn that continued weakening could raise sea level along the U.S. East Coast, shift rainfall patterns, and trigger pronounced cooling in Europe and parts of Africa. Some estimates place the current AMOC strength at its lowest level in roughly a millennium, though the timeline for a potential collapse remains uncertain. The findings add to growing concern among climate scientists that the cold blob may be an early visible sign of deeper oceanic changes affecting global climate.
