Atlantic depression and atmospheric river to impact Madeira and Portugal

An Atlantic depression and an atmospheric river are expected to bring heavy rain and strong winds to the Madeira archipelago between November 4 and November 9. The depression is acting as a motor for winds in the Atlantic, pushing a humid tropical air mass toward the islands.

In Madeira, rainfall is expected to intensify on Friday, November 6, due to a cold front associated with the depression. The Portuguese Institute of the Sea and Atmosphere (IPMA) clarified that there is currently no named depression called “Bruna,” though one of the developing cores within the system could potentially be given that name by the institute in the future.

Weather conditions are predicted to shift to mainland Portugal starting Monday, November 8, with periods of heavy rain and mild temperatures expected.
