Weather alerts and flooding in Madeira
Overview
The Portuguese Institute of the Sea and Atmosphere (IPMA) and the Regional Civil Protection Service (SRPC) have issued warnings for the Autonomous Region of Madeira due to deteriorating weather conditions. Initial reports indicated that while light rain was expected through Friday, October 30, conditions were forecast to worsen starting Saturday, October 31. Heavy precipitation was anticipated to affect the southern slopes and highlands, bringing risks of flash floods, inundations, mass movements, and falling debris. Maritime agitation was also expected, with waves reaching up to 2.5 meters on the northern coast and Porto Santo. Subsequent updates confirmed a yellow warning for the archipelago. Forecasts indicated that the heaviest precipitation would occur in southern regions and highlands, with heavy showers and thunderstorms potentially occurring between midnight and 09:00 on Sunday. Civil Protection advised residents to secure outdoor objects, clear drainage systems, and avoid driving through flooded roads or parking in landslide-prone areas. As conditions intensified, the SRPC upgraded the warning to an orange alert for the southern coast and mountainous regions, effective from midnight until 09:00 on Sunday, November 1, specifically for heavy showers accompanied by thunderstorms. Yellow alerts remained in place for the northern coast and Porto Santo. By Sunday, November 1, severe weather and intense precipitation triggered numerous emergencies across the island. In Santa Cruz, local civil protection recorded 37 occurrences between 08:00 and 19:00, including flooding in homes, garages, and public roads, as well as fallen trees and unstable walls. One incident in Caniço involved a tree falling onto a vehicle on the Estrada do Garajau. The SRPC reported approximately 30 incidents island-wide, with Funchal being the most affected municipality with 12 reported situations. On November 7, the weather system identified as depression Bruna continued to impact the region.
