Atlantic hurricane activity hits lowest levels since 1941

The Atlantic hurricane season has seen exceptionally low activity, with no hurricanes recorded as the basin enters the peak period in September. This lack of development marks the lowest level of activity since 1941, according to data regarding accumulated cyclone energy (ACE).

Meteorologists attribute this trend to an strengthening El Niño and record vertical wind shear. These conditions create high-altitude winds that tear apart tropical disturbances before they can intensify into hurricanes. While five named storms have formed this season, none have reached hurricane strength.

The absence of major storms has benefited the US energy sector, as Gulf Coast refineries, offshore platforms, and export terminals have avoided precautionary shutdowns. However, forecasters note that the season continues until November 30, leaving room for potential late-season development.
