Atlantic Meridional Overturning Circulation Threatened by Climate Change
A new study published in *Nature Communications* by climate researcher Mohima Mimi and her team used decades of NASA atmospheric data and climate simulations to assess the future of the Atlantic Meridional Overturning Circulation (AMOC). The researchers found that the AMOC is slowing and could weaken substantially by the end of the century. Their projections indicate that a weakened AMOC would intensify storms along the U.S. West Coast, particularly California, while reducing storm activity over Greenland and the Arctic. The study highlights the AMOC’s central role in the global climate system and warns of widespread climatic shifts if the circulation collapses.
These findings add to growing scientific concern that human‑induced climate change is destabilising major oceanic currents, with potential consequences for weather patterns far beyond the Atlantic region.
