Atopic dermatitis awareness highlights physical and emotional impacts

September is designated as the month for Atopic Dermatitis awareness, highlighting the impacts of this chronic, non-contagious inflammatory skin condition. According to the Brazilian Society of Dermatology (SBD), the disease is characterized by skin barrier alterations and intense, recurring itching.

Beyond physical symptoms like dryness and lesions, the condition can significantly affect mental and social well-being. Dermatologist Edriane Araújo notes that uncontrolled symptoms can impair sleep, concentration, social interaction, and self-esteem. The intense itching often creates a cycle where scratching increases inflammation, leading to further crises.

In infants, symptoms such as redness and scaling often appear in the first months of life. Health guidelines, including those from the Ministry of Health, recommend specific care for affected children, such as short baths (5 to 10 minutes) using lukewarm water (27°C to 30°C) and applying emollients after drying the skin to maintain hydration.
