Atopic dermatitis awareness and management

Atopic dermatitis is a chronic, non-contagious inflammatory skin condition characterized by a compromised skin barrier, intense itching, dryness, and redness. Medical experts describe it as a complex systemic and immunological pathology rather than a simple skin issue.

The condition can manifest in infancy and persist into adulthood. Physical symptoms often lead to secondary issues, including sleep disturbances, anxiety, depression, and reduced quality of life. In children, it can impact school performance, while in adults, it may affect professional and social stability.

Management strategies include the use of emollients and specific bathing practices, such as short baths in lukewarm water with pH-balanced soaps. While prevalence varies by region—affecting between 2% and 5% of the population in Portugal and at least 10% of children in Argentina—recent advancements in biological therapies and molecular inhibitors offer new management options for severe cases.

In recognition of the condition, September has been designated as Atopic Dermatitis awareness month. The Brazilian Society of Dermatology (SBD) emphasizes that the disease involves skin barrier alterations and recurring itching that can create a cycle where scratching increases inflammation. Dermatologist Edriane Araújo notes that uncontrolled symptoms can impair sleep, concentration, social interaction, and self-esteem. For infants, health guidelines recommend short baths of 5 to 10 minutes using lukewarm water (27°C to 30°C) and applying emollients immediately after drying to maintain hydration.
