Greek police launch Traffic Commander system to cut Athens congestion

On 21 July 2026 the Hellenic Police unveiled a new traffic‑management platform called Traffic Commander at the Thessaloniki Operations Centre (ΘΕΠΕΚ) of the Attica Police Directorate. Developed entirely by police software engineers, the system aggregates real‑time data from 24 sources – including traffic cameras, drones, patrol vehicles and two‑wheelers – to create a single operational picture of the Athens metropolitan area.

Traffic Commander processes roughly 50,000 traffic events each day and is designed to cut congestion by 25‑30 % once fully operational in September. It works alongside the existing KOMVOS unit and will generate monthly performance reports. Ten specialised drones, donated by the Union of Greek Shipowners for €125 000, provide aerial coverage, while 15 certified pilots and 135 field coordinators support rapid response.

Attica Police Deputy Director Thanasí Kámpara described the tool as “more than a digital map” – a mechanism that turns massive data flows into actionable knowledge. Citizen‑Protection Minister Michalis Chrysochoidis called the rollout a major step toward improving daily life for the region’s 4 million residents and 700 000 vehicles entering central Athens each day.
