Overview

Heavy congestion on Athens' main arteries persisted through late July 2024, prompting officials to advise longer travel times and alternative routes while the toll‑free Attiki Odos remained comparatively fluid. The Ministry of Digital Governance reported around 4,000 traffic‑violation tickets issued by the existing smart‑camera network and said 388 new units would become operational within ten days, targeting red‑light, helmet, seat‑belt and mobile‑phone breaches.

On 21 July 2024 the Hellenic Police launched the Traffic Commander platform, aggregating data from 24 sources and processing about 50 000 traffic events daily; the system is expected to cut congestion by 25‑30 % once fully operational in September. The 388 red‑light cameras, installed by July 2024, operate 24 hours a day, automatically forwarding evidence to police while respecting privacy safeguards.

The final 46‑km northern segment of the E65 motorway was inaugurated on 23‑24 July 2026, completing the 182‑km north‑south corridor linking Lamia with the Aegean‑Balkan axis. Toll stations at Oxyneia and Agiofyllou charge €13.50 for a passenger car, and travel times were reduced dramatically: Athens‑Grevena now about four hours, Lamia‑Egnatia 1 h 45 min, with connections to the ports of Igoumenitsa and Volos roughly two hours shorter. The highway has been added to the Waze navigation system and is described as enhancing freight, tourism and regional development. Ongoing works include the Skaramagas triple junction and upgrades to the Athens‑Thessaloniki railway line.

In late July 2026 the Attica Region completed the rollout of the 388 traffic cameras, adding AI‑enabled detection of seat‑belt, helmet and mobile‑phone use and installing average‑speed‑section controls on Syngrou Avenue. Violations generate photographic and video evidence that is sent automatically to the Digital Confirmation System and the police, with fines issued through the gov.gr portal and forwarded to the tax authority if unpaid.
