Attica municipalities announce child allowances up to 3,000 euros
Municipalities in the Attica region of Greece are implementing new financial incentives to combat declining birth rates. Local authorities are shifting focus from infrastructure projects toward direct support for family income to address demographic challenges.
The Municipality of Elliniko-Argyroupoli has announced a six-measure package. Starting January 1, 2027, eligible residents can receive financial assistance ranging from 1,000 to 3,000 euros per new birth, subject to income criteria. Additional measures include exemptions from municipal fees, free meals in nurseries and daycare centers, free creative activities, participation in cultural and sports programs, and a basic package of baby supplies. Mayor Giannis Konstantatos noted that births in the municipality have dropped by nearly 50% over the last decade, falling from approximately 500 in 2014 to an estimated 250 in 2025.
Other regional efforts include the Municipality of Iraklio Attikis, which has provided a one-time 1,000 euro aid for a first child since 2020 based on income levels. The Municipality of Kallithea has also moved toward approving similar support measures.
