Attica Region Launches 388 Red‑Light Traffic Cameras
The Attica regional authority completed the installation of 388 automated traffic cameras that will monitor red‑light violations on Athens’ road network. The devices are positioned at 100 high‑risk intersections covering 66 municipalities and will operate continuously, recording only when a signal is red. Each breach triggers a six‑photo and video capture that is transmitted electronically to the Digital Traffic Violation Certification System and the Hellenic Police for processing.
Under current Greek traffic law, a red‑light offence carries a €700 fine and a 60‑day licence suspension; repeat offences raise the penalty to €1,000 or €2,000 and extend the suspension up to one year. The rollout is part of a broader safety programme that will bring the total number of traffic‑monitoring devices in the region to 436, including cameras that also detect excessive speed, mobile‑phone use and seat‑belt non‑compliance. So far, 4,127 violations have been recorded by existing cameras, 41 % of which involve red‑light breaches.
The initiative was announced by Minister of Digital Governance Dimitris Papastergiou and Minister of Citizen Protection Michalis Chrysochodidis, who highlighted the project’s role in shaping a new driving culture and reducing road fatalities.
