Attica Region increases mosquito spraying by 30% to combat West Nile virus
The Attica Region has increased its mosquito spraying operations by 30% to protect public health from the West Nile virus. These enhanced measures include both ground-based and aerial spraying throughout the region.
This increase is part of the Integrated Mosquito Management Program and is intended to be long-term; the 30% increase is also planned for the upcoming 2027-2029 triennial program, for which a tender process is already underway. The region is working in collaboration with the Benaki Phytopathological Institute, which provides scientific monitoring and research to identify where and when interventions are most needed.
Regional Governor Nikos Hardalias stated that the decision to strengthen these targeted actions was driven by the emergence of West Nile virus cases and the risks associated with climate change.
