Attica installs 388 red‑light cameras to curb traffic violations

The Attica regional authority has completed the installation of 388 red‑light‑camera units at high‑risk intersections across the basin. The €13.38 million project is funded by the EU Recovery and Resilience Fund as part of the “Road‑Safety Improvement Programme”. Each camera operates 24 hours a day, recording six photos and a short video of any vehicle that runs a red signal. The evidence is automatically sent to the Hellenic Police for verification while privacy safeguards prevent identification of drivers. The system is being linked to the traffic‑management databases of the Ministry of Digital Governance and the police. Regional Governor Nikos Chardalias described the rollout as a preventive measure, stressing that red‑light violations are among the most dangerous road behaviours and can cost lives in a split second. He said the region has fulfilled its responsibility and now awaits full activation by state authorities.
