Attica Region launches emergency mosquito spraying in East Attica
The Attica Region has launched a large-scale emergency mosquito spraying operation covering approximately 10,000 stremmata in East Attica to combat the spread of the West Nile virus. The operation, which utilized high-pressure turbine machines for Ultra Low Volume (ULV) spraying, was conducted overnight in areas including Artemida, Spata, and near Athens International Airport.
This escalation follows a rise in confirmed cases, with 232 cases recorded in Greece, the majority of which are located in Attica. Regional Governor Nikos Hardalias, in coordination with the National Public Health Organization (EODY) and the Benaki Phytopathological Institute, announced the intensified measures. The region has increased its mosquito control activities by 30% this year compared to previous cycles.
The spraying used the approved insecticide CYTROL 10/4, which is designed to be photodisintegrable to minimize environmental residue. Authorities are also implementing door-to-door inspections and using drones to monitor hard-to-reach areas. Similar emergency measures have also been initiated in the Municipality of Kordeliou – Evosmos following the detection of cases in neighboring areas.
