Attica rolls out pilot traffic changes and new red‑light camera network

The municipality of Irakleio in Attica released its first findings after a six‑day pilot of new traffic regulations on Peukon, Pr. Lofos and their approaches. Officials highlighted three points: a call for residents to submit observations by email, daily on‑site monitoring by traffic researchers, and continuous coordination with traffic police and municipal police. Mayor Nikos Bampalos stressed that “traffic interventions need time, patience and systematic evaluation.”

Separately, the Attica regional authority completed the installation of 388 red‑light surveillance cameras at 100 critical junctions in the Le Kanopedi area. The Italian‑made devices automatically record violations when a vehicle crosses a newly painted white line after the red signal, then transmit data to the digital penalty system for human verification before fines are issued. The first 100 cameras are expected to be fully operational by August, aiming to curb the 286 red‑light violations and 579 accidents recorded in June.
