Attica Roots Festival showcases Greek music heritage in Sunion, Attica

The Attica Roots Festival, a free, open-air series organized by the Attica regional government, continued its opening night at the archaeological site of Sunion on the southern edge of the Athens plain. The concert featured leading Greek singer Demetra Galani, the Estoudianina of Nea Ionia, and the Greek Byzantine Choir, performing works by Vasilis Tsitsanis and intertwining traditional folk songs with Byzantine chants. The event was staged against the backdrop of the illuminated Temple of Poseidon and the Aegean Sea, drawing large crowds who enjoyed the blend of cultural histories. Attica governor Nicos Khardalias highlighted the festival’s goal of presenting culture as a public good, stressing free entry to ensure all citizens can engage with the region’s musical roots. The festival plans nine concerts in total, aiming to bring cultural activities to every neighbourhood across Attica.
