Overview
July‑August 2026 saw Greece’s summer cultural programme broaden further. The classical comedy **Lysistrata** opened the 55th Olympus Festival at the Ancient Theatre of Dion (25 July) and repeated at the Dovodian Festival (31 July). Thessaloniki’s municipal “Pylaiotika” folk festival (17‑20 July) offered free concerts and dance around the Church of Prophet Elijah. Crete’s interdisciplinary **Festum π** returned to Chania (26 July‑2 August) with mathematics, music, poetry, climate talks and AI‑music workshops, featuring Katia & Marielle Labège and the New Cretan Quartet, followed by the 14th Chamber Music Festival (23 August‑4 September). Athens’ Attica Roots Festival highlighted The Chaínes, while Argos‑Mikon’s “Cultural Summer” series (20‑26 July) combined film, Karagiozis, children’s cinema and tribute concerts. The Holy Metropolis of Kitros ran a City Camp for children (until 1 August). The 32nd International Dance Festival in Kalamata (14‑23 July) attracted modern‑dance companies from ten countries, and the Cultural Nauspliada festival took place in Nafplio (15‑23 August). A free open‑air staging of Goethe’s “The Co‑conspirators” was held in Mesolongi (22 July). New events added to the summer wave included a Manolis Mitsias concert and a Mikis Theodorakis tribute in Sithonia and Chania (29 July‑1 August), a three‑day Saint Paraskevi kourbani festival in Choriti (25‑27 July), continued highlights at the Kalamata Dance Festival such as Yoann Bourgeois’s “He Who Falls” (17 July) and the Berber‑inspired “Amazigh in Situ” at Ancient Messene (22 July), and summer concerts by Eleni Tsaligopoulou on Ikaria (4 August) and Socrates Malamas in Lavrio (1 August). On 24‑25 July the Athens‑Epidaurus Festival staged Aristophanes’ “Eirini” at Epidaurus, and on 27‑28 July the Teatro del Nuevo Mundo presented “Mia Alli Thiva” in Thessaloniki, both free to the public.
