The Attica Traffic Police have launched a new wave of intensive inspections and special operations targeting electric scooter usage in Athens. This crackdown follows two recent serious accidents in Tino and Glyka Nera involving a 14-year-old and a 16-year-old.

Authorities are focusing on minors violating road codes, as well as businesses that rent or provide scooters to individuals under the age of 17. Current legislation prohibits scooter use for those under 17 and mandates insurance, while also imposing stricter penalties for riding on roads with speed limits exceeding 50 km/h.

Data from the first eight months of 2026 shows that 6,127 inspections were conducted, resulting in 3,700 violations. These included 1,844 instances involving rented scooters and 1,800 involving privately owned ones. Among the violators, 20 were minors aged 12 to 15, 136 were over 15, and 3,544 were adults. Common infractions included riding without a protective helmet, speeding, and operating on high-speed roads.
