Auckland City Rail Link records one million trips in first two weeks
Auckland’s rail network has recorded more than one million train boardings within the first two weeks of the City Rail Link (CRL) opening. Transport Minister Chris Bishop and Auckland Mayor Wayne Brown reported that the second week alone saw over 506,000 boardings, surpassing the previous weekly record set in March 2019.
Data indicates significant shifts in travel patterns, particularly in West Auckland. Average daily trips between western stations and the city centre have risen by nearly 173 per cent compared to the six weeks prior to the CRL opening. Additionally, journeys between the western and eastern rail corridors have tripled.
Mayor Wayne Brown noted that weekday boardings at city centre stations increased by 87 per cent. The Te Waihorotiu and Karanga-a-Hape stations have become the second and third busiest on the network, following Waitematā.
