Auckland City Rail Link development

The development of Auckland’s City Rail Link (CRL) has progressed from infrastructure milestones to its scheduled public opening.

In late August, Auckland Transport reported significant progress, including the completion of the ‘First Look’ event series at the Te Waihorotiu station, which is expected to become the country’s busiest rail hub. Concurrently, safety and mobility upgrades involving pedestrian rail level crossings reached near completion, with new bridges at Te Mahia and Takaanini stations designed to separate pedestrians and cyclists from the rail corridor.

By mid-September, the project transitioned from a construction phase to an operational transit network. The CRL is scheduled to open to the public on September 13, marking a major milestone for Auckland’s public transport. The system includes overhauled hubs such as Waitematā Station and Karanga-a-hape, intended to improve city-wide accessibility.

During the official opening ceremony, Minister of Transport Chris Bishop described the project as a “moment of growth for Auckland,” noting that it concludes a long history of regional transit proposals dating back to the early 20th century. The underground railway system, costing approximately $5.5 billion, is expected to enhance commuting efficiency and create new opportunities for local commerce, dining, and tourism.
