Auckland City Rail Link records two million trips in first month
Auckland’s City Rail Link (CRL) recorded over two million passenger trips during its first month of operation. Approximately two-thirds of these trips utilized the new tunnels and stations. Auckland Mayor Wayne Brown noted that the high usage indicates the project is meeting its goal of moving people through the city more efficiently.
Patronage saw significant spikes due to a sold-out All Blacks match at Eden Park and increased off-peak travel during school holidays. Specific stations saw notable growth, including Sylvia Park up 56%, New Lynn up 47%, and Panmure up 42%.
The NZ$5.5 billion project involved constructing 3.45 kilometres of twin rail tunnels and two new underground stations. Beyond physical construction, the project required complex legal and engineering work to define underground land parcels. Surveying firm CKL managed the creation of three-dimensional legal boundaries for the tunnels as they pass beneath private and public property, lodging 30 survey plans to date.
