Audits reveal financial mismanagement in Peru and Dominican Republic
Audits by the Comptroller General have identified significant financial mismanagement in public institutions in Peru and the Dominican Republic.
In Peru, the Local Education Management Unit (Ugel) Ambo incurred an economic loss of S/ 37,480.65 due to excessive tax payments made between January 2023 and April 2026. The audit also revealed that the entity paid an unjustified S/ 5,479.00 fine to Sunat despite having committed no infraction. Additionally, the institution faces a pending tax debt of S/ 102,125.00 following delays in paying withheld taxes.
In the Dominican Republic, an audit of the Ministry of Higher Education, Science and Technology (Mescyt) revealed outstanding debts to suppliers totaling 737,867,195.22 pesos as of December 31, 2023. These obligations date back to 2018 and primarily involve national and international scholarship programs, which account for 91% of the ministry's total accounts payable. While recent payments have reduced some balances, significant arrears remain.
