Augsburg-Gablingen prison abuse trial to begin in January

A major criminal trial is set to begin on January 7 at the Augsburg District Court regarding allegations of widespread prisoner abuse at the Augsburg-Gablingen correctional facility. Thirteen former justice officials face charges, including the prison's former director and her deputy.

The remaining eleven defendants are former members of the facility's security group, a specialized unit tasked with managing violent or high-risk inmates. Prosecutors allege a “system of arbitrariness” involving 170 specific cases, with more than 100 inmates reportedly victimized.

The defendants face various charges, including false imprisonment, coercion, and bodily harm or dangerous bodily harm committed while in office. Due to the scale of the proceedings and the number of defendants and potential co-plaintiffs, the court has scheduled at least 51 days of hearings to manage the significant organizational requirements.
