Augsburg-Gablingen prison abuse trial

Overview

A criminal trial is scheduled to commence on January 7 at the Augsburg District Court concerning allegations of widespread prisoner abuse at the Augsburg-Gablingen correctional facility.

Thirteen former justice officials, including the prison’s former director and deputy, face charges such as false imprisonment, coercion, and bodily harm. Eleven of the defendants are former members of a specialized security unit. Prosecutors allege a ‘system of arbitrariness’ involving 170 specific cases and more than 100 victimized inmates. Due to the complexity and scale of the case, the court has planned at least 51 days of hearings.
