A total solar eclipse will occur on August 12, 2024, with the path of totality passing over mainland Spain, Iceland and Greenland. Totality will last up to two minutes and 18 seconds, and the point of greatest coverage will be off Iceland’s west coast. The Moon’s shadow will travel roughly 5,130 miles (8,260 km) across the Atlantic.
The eclipse will be accompanied by a six‑planet alignment before dawn and the Perseid meteor shower after nightfall. Millions of people in the totality zone and many more in the partial‑eclipse region – which includes the northern United States, Canada, much of Europe and West Africa – are advised to use certified eclipse glasses or other ISO‑approved eye protection.
