Total Solar Eclipse on August 12 2026 Darkens Spain, Iceland and Greenland

A total solar eclipse will occur on 12 August 2026, with the path of totality crossing northern Spain, Portugal, Iceland, Greenland and northern Russia. Totality will last up to two minutes 18 seconds, while a deep partial eclipse (up to 94 % coverage) will be visible across much of Europe, the United Kingdom, North America and West Africa.

Safe observation requires ISO 12312‑2 certified eclipse glasses or proper solar filters; ordinary sunglasses are ineffective. Public viewing events are planned in several countries, including a public session at the Dijon‑Darois aerodrome in France, outreach by the Société astronomique de Bourgogne, and recommendations from NASA and the Algerian CRAAG. Astronomers note that six neighboring planets will form an arc before dawn, and the Perseid meteor shower will peak that night, adding to the spectacle. Eclipse mapmaker Michael Zeiler intends to observe from a cruise ship in a Greenland fjord.
