Aura farming competitions spread across Latin America
The internet trend of “aura farming” is transitioning from social media platforms to physical gatherings across Latin America. These competitions involve young people, primarily aged 14 to 20, performing exaggerated gestures, facial expressions, and internet memes to demonstrate charisma, confidence, and stage presence.
Events have been organized in several countries, including Argentina, Brazil, Mexico, Peru, and Bolivia. In Argentina, gatherings have occurred in cities such as Mar del Plata, Córdoba, and Buenos Aires. In Mexico, participants use viral trends like “mewing” or specific dance moves to win over crowds. In Ecuador, a recent tournament in Quito’s La Carolina park drew approximately 200 attendees.
The phenomenon has faced varying local responses. In Costa Rica, the local government of Santa Ana prohibited an event due to a lack of permits, sparking debate over the use of public spaces for youth recreation. Similarly, a mayor in Honduras has banned the practice. While some view these battles as harmless creative outlets, others see them as a generational clash or a source of public disorder.
