Latin America sees rise in ‘aura farming’ street battles
The internet trend known as ‘aura farming’ has transitioned from social media to real-world street competitions across Latin America. Originating in Brazil, these ‘aura battles’ involve participants performing dances, poses, and gestures in public spaces like beaches, parks, and squares to earn crowd validation and ‘good vibes.’
Participants often dress as characters from video games, comic books, or animated films, utilizing internet-inspired movements and references to popular culture. The phenomenon, which draws heavily from gaming terminology and social media challenges, has seen gatherings in several countries, including Peru, Mexico, Argentina, Bolivia, and Brazil.
Unlike traditional competitive sports, these battles focus on self-expression, charisma, and confidence without physical contact between competitors. Spectators typically film the performances to share on platforms like TikTok, further fueling the trend's digital presence.
