Expansion and digital gamification of 'Farmar Aura' trend

Overview

The Brazilian internet meme ‘farmar aura’ has evolved from digital slang into a series of physical social competitions across Latin America. Rooted in gaming terminology where ‘farming’ refers to repetitive resource gathering, the trend uses ‘aura points’ as an imaginary scoreboard to quantify social capital. Participants aim to gain points through charisma and composure, while losing them through embarrassing moments.

By mid-August 2026, the phenomenon expanded significantly beyond Brazil into Mexico, Bolivia, Argentina, Ecuador, and Peru. These ‘aura battles’ involve participants using poses, walks, and dances to demonstrate presence, with winners often determined by the spontaneous reactions and applause of live audiences. In Mexico, the trend has gained significant traction in cities such as Xalapa, Mérida, Veracruz, and Cancún, where an event at Parque Las Palapas drew over 500 spectators. Some municipal governments have even hosted events to engage youth through creative expression.

In Argentina, the movement has faced localized volatility. In Mar del Plata, an event at Plaza Mitre was disrupted by individuals throwing stones and bottles at participants, forcing the competition to end. Despite such incidents, community events continue to be organized, including a ‘Batalla de Farmear Aura’ at Plaza San Martín in Escobar, designed to integrate digital culture and urban entertainment through freestyle challenges and live music.

Beyond physical gatherings, the concept has transitioned into a formal digital ranking system. SWAGGER Magazine launched ‘The Aura 100,’ a platform where users vote on head-to-head matchups between celebrities to determine who possesses the most ‘aura,’ defined as a blend of individuality and an elusive ‘x-factor.’ While widely embraced by Generation Z, some public figures, such as Mexican personality Poncho de Nigris, have criticized the movement as a ‘senseless fad.’
