Auschwitz survivor calls for ban on AfD party

Eva Umlauff, president of the International Auschwitz Committee and a Holocaust survivor, has issued an open letter calling for legal proceedings to ban the far-right Alternative for Germany (AfD) party “before it is too late.”

In her letter to Hendrik Wüst, the Prime Minister of North Rhine-Westphalia, Umlauff urged the leader to turn his previous statements regarding the party’s unconstitutional stances into concrete action. She cited the party's recent electoral success in Saxony-Anhalt and expressed deep concern over their proposed policies, including the segregation of refugee children and children with disabilities into separate classrooms.

Umlauff also characterized the party’s “remigration” plans—a term often associated with mass deportations in far-right circles—as unconstitutional. Wüst has previously called for a working group of federal and state representatives to investigate whether the Federal Constitutional Court should initiate a ban on the party.
