Auspicious Ark hospital ship conducts medical mission in West Africa

The Chinese naval hospital ship Auspicious Ark is conducting a humanitarian medical mission across West Africa. The vessel arrived at the port of Conakry, Guinea, on October 3, 2026, for a mission scheduled to last until October 10. During its stay in Guinea, the ship will provide free medical consultations and treatments to pre-selected patients identified through a screening process supervised by the Ministry of National Defense.

The ship's mission follows a recent stop in Dakar, Senegal, where it marked the first visit of a Chinese naval vessel to the country. Prior to reaching Senegal, the Auspicious Ark visited Mauritania, where it provided significant medical assistance, including managing over 1,600 patient visits in a single day.

As part of the People's Liberation Army Navy, the Auspicious Ark is equipped with 18 clinical departments, eight operating rooms, and a medical team of over 100 personnel. The vessel is capable of performing more than 60 types of medical examinations and procedures. This mission is viewed as an extension of China's medical diplomacy, aimed at strengthening diplomatic, military, and socio-economic ties with African nations through humanitarian aid.
