Chinese hospital ship medical missions in West Africa
Overview
As part of the Harmony 2026 mission, the Chinese naval hospital ship, referred to as the Auspicious Ark or Arche de Bon Augure, is conducting a series of humanitarian medical tours across West Africa.
The mission has included stops in Djibouti, Mauritania, Senegal, and Guinea. In Mauritania, medical teams conducted over 7,500 consultations and 30 surgical operations, while in Senegal, they performed 6,060 consultations and 29 operations. In Guinea, the vessel provided free consultations, high-precision examinations, and surgeries such as cataract operations and lipoma extractions, treating more than 4,000 patients. The ship also provided medical support to Chinese personnel stationed at a local military base in Djibouti.
The mission continued to Côte d'Ivoire, docking at the Autonomous Port of Abidjan for a seven-day mission. This visit marks the first time a Chinese naval hospital ship has provided medical services to the country. The mission aims to treat approximately 4,000 patients using specialized medical teams covering disciplines including cardiology, ophthalmology, urology, gynecology, and pediatrics, while also facilitating professional exchanges.
Following the Côte d'Ivoire mission, the Auspicious Ark arrived at Tema Port, Ghana, for a seven-day humanitarian mission. This marks the first reported visit to Ghana by a Chinese naval hospital ship. The vessel is utilizing onboard facilities, including dental clinics and surgical theatres, to provide services to the public and facilitate professional exchanges between Ghanaian and Chinese military medical personnel regarding naval medicine and emergency response. In response to the arrival, health policy analyst Dr. Kwame Asante urged the Ghanaian government to maintain strict oversight to protect national health data and ensure medications are monitored by the Food and Drugs Authority.
