Australia Coalition unveils plan to scrap net zero targets

The Australian Coalition has unveiled an eight-point energy plan aimed at dismantling current net zero targets and shifting the nation’s energy focus toward fossil fuels and nuclear power. Proposed by shadow energy spokesperson Dan Tehan, the plan includes repealing the Climate Change Act, removing four offshore wind zones, and lifting existing prohibitions on nuclear energy.

The Coalition argues that current energy policies are driven by ideology rather than the practicalities of affordability, reliability, and security. Under the proposal, developers would be encouraged to invest in coal, gas, and nuclear energy instead of focusing primarily on renewables. The plan also suggests canceling existing carbon emissions policies for vehicles and introducing a renewable energy code of conduct.

Technical discussions regarding the plan highlight the challenges of the modern grid, noting that traditional ‘baseload’ power is increasingly complicated by the expansion of rooftop solar and household batteries. The Coalition suggests that refurbishing existing coal-fired power stations could serve as a faster and more cost-effective alternative to nuclear generation, though such efforts would likely require government funding.
