Australian Coalition energy policy proposals

The Australian Coalition has introduced an eight-point energy plan that proposes a significant shift in the nation’s climate and decarbonization policies. The proposal seeks to repeal the Climate Change Act 2022, which would remove legislated net-zero emissions targets, as well as the safeguard mechanism and the New Vehicle Efficiency Standard Act of 2024.

Key components of the plan include the revocation of four offshore wind energy zones in the Hunter, Illawarra, Southern Ocean, and Bunbury regions. To address energy needs, the Coalition intends to lift legislative prohibitions on nuclear energy and encourage investment in coal, gas, and nuclear power. Shadow energy spokesperson Dan Tehan argued that current policies are driven by “ideology rather than affordability and reliability.”

The plan also suggests making federal energy funding to states conditional on prioritizing cost and reliability, while redirecting the Australian Energy Regulator to focus on these metrics. Discussions regarding the proposal note that refurbishing existing coal-fired power stations could serve as a faster alternative to nuclear generation, despite the complexities introduced to the grid by rooftop solar and household batteries.
