Australia faces soaring interest bills as federal debt exceeds $1 trillion

Australian Treasurer Jim Chalmers has warned that global bond market volatility is set to increase the nation's borrowing costs by billions of dollars. This warning comes as Australia's federal debt has surpassed the $1 trillion mark.

Rising bond yields, which have reached 15-year highs across developed economies, are placing significant pressure on public finances. The OECD has also downgraded Australia's economic growth forecast for 2027 to 1.7 per cent, citing the need for governments to contain spending and manage debt sustainability.

In response to these fiscal pressures, Shadow Treasurer Tim Wilson criticized the current administration, arguing that the Albanese government's economic model relies too heavily on debt to fund spending. Meanwhile, international bodies including the IMF and IIF have issued broader warnings regarding the risks of rising debt and interest rates in major global economies.
