Australia national debt milestone and economic debates
Overview
Australia’s gross Commonwealth Government debt has surpassed the A$1 trillion milestone for the first time. This increase is attributed to pandemic-era spending, the global financial crisis, and the rising costs of government services.
Treasurer Jim Chalmers defended the government’s fiscal record, noting that the debt-to-GDP ratio remains lower than many other major advanced economies, such as the United States, the United Kingdom, Germany, and Japan. However, the federal opposition has criticized the government, arguing that rising debt contributes to inflation and that annual interest payments, which are approaching $30 billion, exceed spending on childcare, unemployment benefits, or the Australian Defence Force.
Projections suggest the debt may continue to climb, potentially exceeding A$1.2 trillion by 2030, representing approximately 35% of Australia’s gross domestic product. When including debt from state and territory governments, the total exceeds 50% of the national GDP. Interest payments on public debt have become the fastest-growing area of federal spending according to the 2026 budget.
Recent projections from the Parliamentary Budget Office suggest that national gross debt, including state and territory borrowing, could exceed $2 trillion within four years. This fiscal pressure has coincided with debates over migration policy. The Albanese government is considering reducing Net Overseas Migration (NOM) from approximately 300,000 to 225,000 by 2027–28. However, South Australian Premier Peter Malinauskas has cautioned against a “race to the bottom” regarding migration cuts, arguing that a strong migration program is essential to address an ageing population and support federal and state budgets.
