Australia expands biometric visa requirements for India

The Australian government has expanded its biometric collection requirements to nearly 60 countries, including India, to enhance the security and integrity of its visa system. Under the new rules, visa applicants in India may be required to provide fingerprints and facial images.

The mandate applies to new visa applications lodged on or after October 26, 2026, and does not affect applications already submitted. The Department of Home Affairs will notify applicants if biometrics are required and provide instructions for completion.

Visa services will be facilitated by VFS Global, which will operate 16 centers across India, including locations in Ahmedabad, Bengaluru, Delhi, Mumbai, and Chennai. Applicants may be required to visit a collection center in person or use the Australian Immi App. Those who have previously provided biometrics at an Australian Biometrics Collection Centre and hold a valid passport may be eligible to use the app at no cost. Authorities stated that visa processing times should not be impacted if applicants complete the requirements promptly.
