Australia biometric visa requirement expansion

Overview

On October 26, 2026, the Australian government implemented expanded biometric collection requirements for visa applicants in India. The new regulations require certain applicants to provide fingerprints and facial images to enhance identity verification and reduce fraud. Australian High Commissioner Philip Green noted that these changes apply only to new applications and do not affect those already in process.

By October 30, 2026, it was clarified that the mandate for biometric collection has been expanded to nearly 60 countries, including India. To facilitate these requirements, VFS Global will operate 16 collection centers across Indian cities such as Ahmedabad, Bengaluru, Delhi, Mumbai, and Chennai. Applicants may also utilize the Australian Immi App. Authorities stated that visa processing times should not be impacted if requirements are completed promptly.
