Australia faces economic challenges amid rising debt and migration debates

Australia is facing significant economic debates regarding national debt and migration policy. Gross Commonwealth debt recently surpassed $1 trillion for the first time, with projections from the Parliamentary Budget Office suggesting that national gross debt, including state and territory borrowing, could exceed $2 trillion within four years.

In response to public sentiment and political pressure to reduce intake, the Albanese government is considering adjustments to the Net Overseas Migration (NOM) program, aiming to reduce it from approximately 300,000 to 225,000 by 2027–28. However, South Australian Premier Peter Malinauskas has cautioned against a “race to the bottom” regarding migration cuts. Malinauskas argued that preserving a strong migration program is essential to addressing an ageing population and supporting federal and state budgets, warning that slashing numbers could exacerbate existing economic challenges.
