Australia faces Greens‑led push for AI data centre moratorium

Greens Senator Sarah Hanson-Young has called for an immediate moratorium on approvals for new artificial intelligence data centres until the federal government finalises a regulatory framework and Parliament scrutinises related legislation. The Greens argue that, with about 160 AI data centres already operating across the country, the lack of a unified national approach – highlighted by Queensland and the Northern Territory’s opposition to the Labor‑proposed framework – risks a race to the bottom where tech giants exploit Australian resources.

Prime Minister Anthony Albanese has signalled support for further investment in AI infrastructure but says new centres must meet strict standards, use renewable energy, protect water supplies, create local jobs and safeguard the work of Australian creators. He is establishing an Office of AI within the Department of Prime Minister and Cabinet. The Greens warn that without a moratorium, AI data centres could become “another mining boom”, urging a united front to prevent governments from giving away resources on the cheapest terms.
