Australia establishes Office of AI, data centre rules set
Overview
By mid‑July 2026 the Albanese government formally created an Office of AI inside the Department of the Prime Minister and Cabinet, branding it as the world’s first agency to combine AI policy, data‑centre regulation and creator‑rights protection. The office will draft national AI standards and coordinate policy across defence, education, energy, copyright and other portfolios, while working with Five Eyes partners on security matters.
New legislation accompanying the office imposes strict limits on large AI‑driven data centres: water‑use caps, a requirement to become net exporters of electricity, and mandatory funding for renewable‑power generation and grid connections. Companies must also obtain consent before using Australian books, music, art or news to train AI models, with non‑compliance labelled as theft.
The government argues the framework will streamline approvals and attract overseas investment, positioning Australia as a sovereign AI hub. Critics – including industry groups and opposition MPs – warn the measures are late and risk adding bureaucracy that could stifle innovation. The Australian Academy of Science echoed concerns about reliance on offshore AI models and called for greater R&D investment. The Office of AI therefore aims to balance economic growth with environmental, cultural and national‑security safeguards.
