Australia faces migration scrutiny amid rising asylum claims

Australia is facing increasing political pressure regarding its migration and asylum systems. Recent data shows that 21,600 refugee claims were made between July of last year and June of this year, with approximately 85 per cent of assessed claims being rejected. The number of individuals living in Australia with failed protection visa claims has exceeded 111,000 for the first time.

Specific trends indicate a rise in UK citizens applying for asylum in Australia, which some suggest is due to ‘bad advice’ regarding staying in the country. Meanwhile, the Albanese government is reviewing the entire migration program, including temporary and permanent streams, as Home Affairs Minister Tony Burke finalizes plans to deter non-meritorious claims.

On the political front, One Nation leader Pauline Hanson has proposed a policy to ban arrivals from specific countries, such as Lebanon, Palestine, Afghanistan, and Russia. Additionally, the party has faced scrutiny over its migration manifesto; One Nation representatives clarified that their proposed cap of 130,000 visas per year refers to net migration rather than total visas issued.
