Between June 2022 and June 2026, 485 visa holders increased by 174%, while secondary applicants grew by 204%. As of June 30, 2026, there were 271,191 holders of the 485 visa, with 73,897 being secondary applicants, accounting for approximately 27% to 30% of the total.

Scrutiny has expanded to the asylum system, where 21,600 refugee claims were made between July of the previous year and June of the current year, with approximately 85 per cent of assessed claims being rejected. The number of individuals residing in Australia with failed protection visa claims has surpassed 111,000. Recent trends also indicate a rise in UK citizens applying for asylum, which some suggest is due to ‘bad advice’ regarding staying in the country.

In response, the Albanese government is preparing a new immigration reform plan aimed at curbing ‘visa-hopping’—where migrants apply for asylum as a last resort to extend their stay after holding other visas. A proposed two-part draft bill would require migrants to apply for humanitarian assistance within the first few months of arrival, potentially as early as 30 days.

The government is currently seeking support from Opposition Leader Angus Taylor and the Coalition to pass these laws. While the Coalition is not opposed to the proposals, negotiations continue regarding specific demands, such as stricter bans on certain categories of migrants.
