Australia faces rising drug trafficking threats from AI-enabled crime

Organized crime syndicates are utilizing artificial intelligence to enhance global drug-trafficking operations and evade law enforcement. According to authorities, these criminal networks use AI to generate fraudulent documents, identities, and business records to facilitate large-scale drug imports and money laundering.

Acting Australian Federal Police Assistant Commissioner Donna Parsons stated that the accessibility of AI allows criminal networks to operate more efficiently and adapt quickly to disruption efforts. The technology enables groups to fine-tune existing techniques and reduce the risk of detection by authorities.

International cartels, particularly those operating out of Mexico and Central and South America, are targeting Australia with unprecedented amounts of cocaine and methamphetamine. Professor Toby Walsh of the University of NSW’s AI Institute noted that while AI offers economic benefits, it serves as a ‘double-edged sword’ that provides significant capabilities to bad actors.
