Australian organized crime and drug violence

Australian Federal Police Commissioner Krissy Barrett has warned that an ‘insatiable appetite’ for illicit substances is driving organized crime networks and increasing gang violence across Australia. Barrett noted that these criminal networks are evolving by using artificial intelligence to evade law enforcement and are exploiting Pacific trafficking routes to move cocaine, methamphetamine, heroin, and illicit tobacco.

Violence has escalated, particularly in Sydney, where shootings involving mistaken identity have resulted in the deaths of innocent people. Recent incidents include the shootings of university students Marco Tapia and Joshua Macdonald. Since 2021, approximately eight people have been murdered in such mistaken identity cases.

The transnational nature of these networks was highlighted by the investigation into the murder of Lorenzo Lemalu, a suspected senior figure in the Sydney-based Coconut Cartel, who was killed in Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam. Following an international investigation involving Australian, Vietnamese, and Samoan authorities, two men from New Zealand and Samoa were charged with conspiracy to murder. In response to the rising violence, NSW Premier Chris Minns has introduced new legislation intended to curb organized crime.
